Andy- Great thoughts. Like you, I’ve experimented and tried many things in my life. I guess my message in this article has more to do with deep mastery of a discipline, and to some extent, one’s profession.

I’ve met a lot of people who dabbled in multiple areas, never attaining true mastery, and becoming frustrated in their jobs too. People who develop rare and valuable skills usually work long and hard on developing those skills, which tend to serve them well in work and life.

Of course, being a polymath and attaining proficiency in many things is fine. It enriches you, makes you more well-rounded. All of which can indirectly benefit your main job. But if you’re kind of good in a lot of areas, you may never become great in one specific area. There are tradeoffs here, and each of us has to decide which path works better for us.

Thanks for reading and the thoughtful comments!
