I’ll be lucky if I get through this essay without falling asleep.

Recently, my local library sponsored a writing contest for teens and adults. Categories include fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. All the contest rules are spelled out on the library’s website. Winners receive $50 and get their pieces published in the library’s annual online zine.

Participants must download the free entry form, fill it out, scan it to a computer, and email it with a PDF attachment of your story, essay, or poem.

I like the library’s idea of promoting writing and decided to participate. Unfortunately, I procrastinated and only had one day to submit my work.

That’s why I’m so tired—I was up all night and have yet to sleep.

What we really want is just stuff that works

Lately, I’ve been reading poems from W. B. Yeats and short stories by William Trevor, Wendell Berry, and Claire Keegan. Inspired by these talented writers, a short story idea emerged.

Excited, I brewed a hot tea, fetched a sugar cookie from the cupboard for energy, and sat down yesterday afternoon at my iMac to compose.
