Christine- Asking "why?" is helpful, but sometimes not. If I ask someone why they believe something, it's open ended and they may provide a general answer. However, if I ask someone "how?" they came to believe or know something to be true, then they must tether their answer to some kind of evidence, which I find more useful. Because I can then evaluate the substance of their evidence. Also, what I like about asking "To what end?" is that it forces one to think closely about their motivations and goals, whereas asking "Why" might solicit a less thought out answer. Thanks for reading!
