Great post, Nate. As a police chief, my work phone email was always on. I was in a salaried position and received emails 24/7. Work life balance was definitely skewed back then! Unfortunately, the risk of turning off your work related phone emails is that ambitious coworkers might keep theirs on. They become the “indispensable employee” who stands out for promotion. No question, there are plenty of employers who take advantage of employees. One must decide when it’s time to move on. But know that becoming self employed has it’s challenges, too. No paid vacations or benefits beyond what you generate. I guess the old adage is true, “there is no such thing as a free lunch!”
