Julie- Thanks for reading and your thoughtful comments here. The cartoons were my exaggerations, and I’ll concede that what I think is “poorly dressed” might misinterpret another’s colorful, personal expression. The question is, where do we draw the line between sloppy versus elegant, without sinking into some kind of relativism? Are there no standards? Should fine restaurants lower their dress codes, lest they offend someone’s shabby sense of elegance or be labeled elitist snobs?The guy in the restaurant in the stained, wife beater tank top and sagging sweats. Is he expressing his form of personal elegance, or simply lacking in any self-respect? My sense is, it’s the latter.
